Vikes walk off with win
4-25-14
The Vikings needed some heroics to get past Hart on Thursday afternoon at Valencia High School, and luckily Britney Ross-Smith was up for the challenge.
Ross-Smith came up with the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the seventh, scoring Emma Stanley and sending the Vikings home with the 6-5 victory.
“Hart played a great game early on. We were a little lackadaisical early on,” said Valencia head coach Donna Lee. “The bottom line is we got the run when we needed to. We’re in a battle now (in league).”
Shoshauni Washburn picked up the victory in the circle for Valencia (11-12 overall, 3-1 Foothill League), tossing the final six innings of the contest and allowing just two runs on four hits with six strikeouts.
The Indians got on the board early, scoring three runs in the first off the Vikings’ Elaine Bunyan.
But Valencia stormed back in the third, with Dominique Salgado’s grand slam giving the Vikings a 5-3 lead after three innings of play.
The victory keeps Valencia in a tie for second place with Saugus, one game behind first-place West Ranch.
Valencia gets its shot at West Ranch on Tuesday, while Hart will take on the Wildcats on Thursday.
Hart’s Lauren Bledy was 2-for-3 with a triple and a single, Sienna Vannoy was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Kylie Norwood went 2-for-4 with two runs.
Valencia 14, Canyon 0
4-23-14
Pitcher Elaine Bunyan went the distance, shutting down Canyon and allowing just seven hits on Tuesday at Valencia High.
Valencia’s offense got on the board early, scoring one in the first before blowing things open with an eight-run second and five-run sixth.
Wendy Cardinali was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Brittany Ross-Smith matched the feat for the Vikings (10-12, 2-1), going 2-for-4 with three RBIs of her own. Hanna Cheek was 3-for-3 with an RBI.
For the Cowboys (10-8, 1-2), Paige Johnson and Megan Hill both went 2-for-3 with a double.
Valencia puts Golden Valley down early

Valencia 13, Golden Valley 3, five innings
It was quite the day for Valencia’s Wendy Cardinali, who brought in four RBIs on a double and home run to help the Vikings roll by Golden Valley on Thursday at Valencia High School.
Elaine Bunyan pitched five innings to earn the victory, improving Valencia to 9-12 overall, 1-1 in Foothill League play.
Golden Valley (3-11, 0-2) managed nine hits, but couldn’t hold down the Vikings’ offense.
Valencia got off to a quick start, with Cardinali scoring on a base hit from Dominique Salgado for 1-0 lead.
Cardinali was again in on the action in the second, doubling home three runs in the second, before leading off the fourth with a solo home run to extend the lead to 9-1.
Emma Stanley was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Valencia, while Salgado finished 2-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs.

SCV's stellar softball alumni
4-15-14
No one knows exactly which eight teams will make their way to Oklahoma City for the 2014 NCAA Women’s College World Series.
But the odds are pretty good for five Santa Clarita Valley softball veterans.
West Ranch graduate and Oregon catcher Janelle Lindvall, Valencia graduate and Tennessee shortstop Madison Shipman, fellow former Viking and Arizona State first baseman Bethany Kemp, Canyon graduate and Oklahoma outfielder Brittany Williams, and Golden Valley graduate and Auburn outfielder Branndi Melero all find themselves contributing heavily to top-ranked squads.
Leading the pack in the rankings is Lindvall and her Oregon Ducks, who knocked off UCLA last week to become the top-ranked team in the nation — the first time Oregon has stood atop the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll.
Lindvall, who graduated from West Ranch in 2012, is contributing heavily for the Ducks, and has started all 41 games.
She’s batting .349 with eight home runs and a .615 slugging percentage.
Shipman, who was recently drafted by the USSSA Pride pro team and is a top 25 finalist for the USA Softball Player of the Year award, leads the Volunteers with a .424 batting average and 14 home runs.
Tennessee, which fell to Oklahoma in last season’s national championship series, is currently ranked fourth in the nation.
And speaking of Oklahoma, Canyon High graduate Brittany Williams is back this season looking for her second national title in as many years.
The senior is batting .280 in 2014 for the 19th-ranked Sooners, with four home runs.
Kemp has started all 42 games for the seventh-ranked Sun Devils and is batting .330 with 26 RBIs and a team-high 11 home runs.
And then there’s Melero, who ranks fourth in the country in RBIs per game with 1.41 per. Her .543 on-base-percentage is 13th in the nation and she has upped her batting average to .422, after a freshman year at .274 and sophomore season at .366.
She’s helped the Tigers rise to No. 20 in the nation, and leads the team with 62 RBIs and 30 walks.
All represent the wealth of talent the Santa Clarita Valley has to offer in the softball world, and all are hopeful they’ll be playing for a national title when the Women’s College World Series kicks off in Oklahoma City on May 29.

Madison Shipman drafted to pro softball team
Valencia grad one of college's top players
4-7-14
Things keep getting better for former Valencia standout softball player Madison Shipman.
She was selected No. 2 overall in the National Pro Fastpitch draft by the USSSA Pride on March 30.
If that name sounds familiar, it’s because it should to fans of Santa Clarita Valley softball.
The Pride is the same team that features former Hart and University of Oklahoma catcher Jessica Shults, and former Valencia and University of Michigan pitcher Jordan Taylor.
“It’s really awesome,” Shipman said. “We all grew up together. When we were little we wanted to make it big time, but we were 8, 9, 10 years old saying that. To actually make that happen when we’re older and through college, it’s pretty amazing.”
The Pride, playing out of Kissimmee, Fla., begin their play on May 30 against the PA Rebellion.
Shipman said she had an idea she would be drafted by the Pride — and watched the draft online.
“It was actually a very exciting experience,” she said. “It’s always been a dream of mine. I’m a huge baseball fan. I wanted to be drafted like the baseball guys are I was really excited. My parents were out that weekend and they were midflight when the draft actually happened so I had to call them afterward and they were excited.”
First, though, Shipman has other business to attend to.
Shipman, a senior shortstop at the NCAA No. 5 ranked University of Tennessee, made the preseason All-Southeastern Conference list and is on the Top 50 watch list for the 2014 USA Softball Player of the Year award along with Lady Vol teammate Ellen Renfroe.
USA Softball will announce the Top 25 finalists Wednesday, with the list narrowed down to 10 on May 7 and three on May 21 ahead of an official announcement of the winner on May 27.
She currently boasts a .409 batting average with 45 hits, eight home runs, 26 RBIs and 33 runs scored on the season.
For her career, Shipman has a .342 batting average and 34 home runs.
“It’s a huge honor for me,” she said. “Looking at some of the other names on the list, to be grouped up with them is a huge honor for me. I’ve worked so hard since I was little and to be at the end of my college career, it’s a little sad. It went by so fast.”
First, though, her team is looking to return to the Women’s College World Series, where Shipman and the Volunteers lost in the championship game to Shults’ Sooners last season.
“I’m feeling pretty good so far this year,” Shipman said. “We have a pretty young starting lineup, so it’s been fun mentoring them and teaching them. I’ve been through the SEC conference a couple times. It’s fun to be on the other side teaching them instead of me being the one that’s taught. My No. 1 goal is to win a national championship. I got a taste of it and now I want the whole thing.”
The good news doesn’t stop there.
Shipman was named as a finalist for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate softball on April 2.
She is now one of 10 finalists, narrowed from a field of 30 candidates, for the award that honors student-athletes who excel both on and off the field.
Shipman is the career leader in grand slams at Tennessee with four, and she also tied the school record with a 20-game hitting streak that ran from Feb. 9 through March 11.
On defense, Shipman has a .957 fielding percentage with only six errors through 35 games, and only 28 in her career.
The anthropology major earned Capital One Academic All-American honors in 2013 and has been a first-team All-SEC player for the last two years.
The CLASS Award will be voted on by fans, media and coaches and a winner will be announced during the 2014 NCAA Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, which runs from May 29 through June 4.
Shipman hopes she’ll be in Oklahoma City either way — once again playing for a national title.
