Vikings Beat Canyon in League Opener

The Vikings beat Canyon today in the league opener at Vallhala Field 9-0.

Megan Fogelsong went 3 for 4 today for the Lady Vikings.

Valencia Bats Shut Out Canyon 9-0

In the league opener, Valencia’s bats came alive with 14 hits.  Offensively, the team was led by Lauren Boser who had 3 RBIs on a 1 for 3 hit day, to include a sacrifice fly.  Megan Foglesong was 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and Jessica Spigner went 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.  Annie Dreher continued her hot hitting by going 2 for 2, including a double and 1 RBI.

The Vikings got on the board in the 3rd after Foglesong led off and stole second.  Spigner ripped a shot to left center for the first RBI of the contest and then Lauren Boser came up with a big 2 RBI single with a shot of her own to left center.  Dreher then hit a hard bouncer to left field to knock in an RBI and then another run scored when the left fielder misplayed the ball.  5 runs scored on 6 hits in the 3rd.

In the bottom of the 4th, Lani Bernardino got things started with a perfectly placed slap bunt in front of the plate and Foglesong followed up with her 2nd hit of the day.  Spigner then drove the ball to deep center and the ball hit the top lip of the fence, only to bounce back in the field of play, to capture her 2nd RBI and hit of the day, scoring Bernardino.  Boser followed suit again with her 3rd RBI of the day off a deeply hit ball to centerfield.  To keep things going in the 5th, Dreher led off the inning with a deep hit to center that sailed over the centerfielder’s head.  Lindsey Clark then batted and reached base on a fielder’s choice, stole 2nd, and then advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch.  Bernardino slapped the ball to 3rd and after she was thrown out at 1st , the 1st baseman quickly threw home to nail Clark at the plate, but in the hard slide home the catcher dropped the ball.

Valencia concluded their offense with 9 runs off 14 hits.  Madison Shipman was 2 for 3 on the day and Amy Moore was 2 for 4, each scoring a run.  Defensively, Moore beautifully picked off the Canyon runner threatening to score from 3rd.  Spigner had 12 strike outs, including striking out the side in the 2nd and 3rd innings, and carried a NO-NO into the 7th inning, but gave up 1 hit on the day to the very talented Nicole Johnson.

Valencia next travels to Golden Valley on Tuesday, 4/1 for their second league game.
