Valencia vs Hart

Valencia 6 Hart 3

The Lady Vikings went to Newhall Park today with one goal. Clinch league.  In order to do that, they would have to beat Hart on their field and they did.

In the first inning we went down 123.

The second inning brought Bethany Kemp up who hit a shot so hard there was no way Hart’s right fielder could have handled it.  Bethany’s triple would have been our first run, but the call at the plate after Shannon Fitzgerald’s sac attempt did not go our way.  With 2 outs, Karlie Habitz singled to right and Shannon had her wheels on and easily took third.  The throw from right was headed closer to the dug out than it was to the plate, so Shannon took advantage and scored on a bad throw giving us a 1 run lead.  Justine Sibthorp also singled  in the 2nd, but Shannon’s run was it for us that inning.

The 3rd inning brought our top 3 batters to the plate, but they all flew out to center, left and second.

The 4th inning started off with another hit by Bethany who singled , then was moved over by a sac from Caitlin Rooney, then advanced to 3rd after a bobble by the shortstop who gave Shannon Fitzgerald her base.  With 1 out Karlie Habitz had a sac fly opportunity with a shot to right that was caught, but Bethany was called out for leaving early so the score remained unchanged at 1-0.

The 5th inning resulted in a quick 2 outs, but then Megan Foglesong started a rally with her single followed by a triple by Lauren Boser to score her.  Hart didn’t have the courage to pitch to Shipman so after the intentional walk, they also gave her 2nd base and took their chances with Bethany who was already 2 for 2.  Bethany came up big with a 2 out double and scored Boser and Shipman bringing the score to 4-0.

Hart’s offense had been pretty quiet up until now.  They lead off with a single, then a fielder’s choice and a walk.  With 2 runners on Tracy Chandless came up with a shot to left center that resulted in a home run and a score of 4-3.

Valencia answered back in the 5th with a Karlie Habitz single.  Melissa Fundora in to run for her stole 2nd base, then scored on a clutch single by Annie Dreher who was pinch hitting for Tori Balta. With a 2 run lead the girls were able to hold the Indians in the 6th after Carly Mortensen came in to the circle replacing Sarah Enriquez in the 5th.

The top of the 7th brought Madison Shipman up to bat who doubled, then scored on a sac fly by Bethany Kemp who almost completed a cycle if not for a great play by the center fielder.  With a score of 6-3 the Indians threatened in the bottom of the 7th with back to back infield singles and a walk to load the bases, but the Vikings came out unscathed and clinched their 10th consecutive league title.

Sarah Enriquez started the game strong and received the win.

The Lady Vikings play Saugus on Tuesday at Saugus High School.
