Valencia vs Canyon

Lady Vikings take on Canyon.

With Carly Mortensen taking to the mound the Cowboys started off with a slap triple to left field. Next batter struck out followed by a walk. With a grounder hit to Mortensen she was unable to get the runner at 3rd in time. The next batter hit to Madison Shipman who threw the ball to home to get the runner out. With two outs the next batter hit a ball to Shipman, but was to fast to get to 1st and two runs score. The last out of the inning was a strikeout. Bottom of the 1st, Amy Moore hit a single to center. With Missy Fundora running for Moore, Shipman hit a 2 run homerun over the center field fence. Caitlin Rooney walked. Top of the 2nd, the Cowboys went down in order. Bottom of the 2nd, Tori Balta singled to left. Top of 3rd, Cowboys were once again sat down in order. Bottom of 3rd, Moore led off the inning with a walk. Bethany Kemp hit a ground ball to 3rd but the fielder threw the ball to 2nd to get Shipman out. Kemp followed up by stealing 2nd. Rooney singled to short with an overthrow to 1st allowing Kemp to score. The top of the 4th was led off by a walk followed by a ball that was hit to Shipman who threw to 2nd to get the lead runner out. The next out was a fly ball recorded by Annie Dreher who was filling in for the injured Lauren Boser at 1st. With two outs in the inning, Mortensen threw a pitch that hit the batter allowing runners at 1st and 2nd. The next batter hit a ball off Mortensen’s glove and the runner was safe at 1st. With the bases loaded, Mortensen was able to get the batter to groundout to Shipman who threw the ball to Dreher for the final out of the inning. The top of the 6th was a wild inning for the Vikings. A grounder to Shipman was thrown to Dreher at 1st who did the splits to record the first out of the inning. Once again a ball was hit to Shipman who threw the ball to 1st, but the ball was dropped allowing the runner to be safe. The folloing at bat was a sacrifice bunt that Dreher picked up to throw to 1st, but the ball was dropped by Kemp who in turn threw to Rooney at 3rd to get the runner out on a fabulous play by both. With two down the batter hit a ball to Shipman who threw to 1st for the out, but the umpires ruled that Dreher pulled her foot off the bag allowing the runner to be safe. The Cowboys were able to tie the game with a pitch that got by Moore. The last out of the inning was a groundout to Shipman. Bottom of the 6th, Rooney hit a single to left field and advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch. With Jessica Smith running for Rooney, Smith advanced to 3rd on a hit to short by Dreher. The Vikings were unable to score the run. In the 7th with the score tied 3-3, Sarah Enriquez came in for relief of Mortensen after a walk and a single. With runners at 1st and 2nd Enriquez walked the next batter to load the bases. In an unfortunate set of circumstances and the bases loaded Canyon scored two runs on to hit batters. Mortensen was brought back in and got the first out with a comebacker that she threw home, followed by 2 strikeouts to end the inning. In the bottom of the 7th the Vikings were unable to pull off a win as they went down in order. Final score Valencia 3 Cowboys 5. Mortensen had 7 strikeouts in the game.


Valencia vs Saugus

Lady Vikings take on Saugus.

Top of the 1st, Madison Shipman walked and stole 2nd. Bottom of the 1st with Sarah Enriquez taking to the mound, the Centurions went down in order.  Top of 2nd, Caitlin Rooney singled to center and advanced to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Amy Moore. Annie Dreher walked. In the bottom of the 2nd the Centurions were once again unable to score. Top of the 3rd, Lauren Boser walked. Elena Dickson running for Boser was able to advance to 2nd on a wild pitch that was thrown to Shipman. Shipman walked. Dickson was able to advance to 3rd on a hard hit ball by Megan Foglesong to 2nd. Centurions were once again held in the bottom of the 3rd. Top of 4th, Moore lead off the inning when she drew a walk. Missy Fundora was put in to run for Moore. Dreher hit a bloop single over 1st base and Fundora was tagged out at home. Bottom of the 4th, the Centurions were once again sat down in order. Top of 5th, Boser singled to center and Foglesong walked. Bottom of 5th, the Centurions were unable to score. Top of 6th, Bethany Kemp drew a walk and stole 2nd on a wild pitch. Dreher walked, putting runners at 1st and 2nd. Lindsay Clark grounded out advancing the runners to 2nd and 3rd. The Vikings were unable to capitalize. Bottom of 6th, Centurions again were unable to score. Top of the 7th, Boser lead off the inning with a single to left. Shipman walked. Foglesong laid down a sacrifice bunt which the 3rd baseman bobbled and everyone was safe. With bases loaded Moore singled to right scoring Boser and Shipman and advancing Foglesong to 2nd. Kemp hit a hard shot to the diving short stop who threw it to 3rd to tag Foglesong out. Dreher walked. Shannon Fitzgerald singled to center to scoring Fundora who was running for Moore. Kemp scored on a wild pitch . With the score 4-0 going into the bottom of the 7th, the first batter hit a ball down the 3rd base line for a homerun. The next batter was walked followed by a strikeout. With a runner on 1st the next batter was able to slap the ball in between fielders. With runners at 1st and 3rd the next batter was able to get a hold of one for a homerun. With the score even, Carly Mortensen came in to relieve Enriquez. The first batter singled to center followed by a strikeout and a groundout to Shipman. Into extra innings we go. With the score tied at 4, the only base runner to get on was Foglesong who singled to center and stole 2nd base. Bottom of the 8th, first batter hit a ball off Mortensen’s glove and was safe at 1st. Next batter hit a sacrifice bunt to Mortensen who threw the runner out at 1st advancing the other to 2nd. With a runner at 2nd, the batter was able to hit a single to short and was safe at 1st. The next batter struck out. The next play proved to be a crucial moment for the Vikings. With the batter slapping to Shipman, Shipman caught the ball and did not throw it as she heard the umpire call an out only to find out that it was ruled a hit. With bases loaded, Amy Moore threw down to 3rd to get the runner out that was taking a huge lead. Unfortunately, the ball was to hard to handle and the Centurions were able to score to win the game. Enriquez had 3 strikeouts and Mortensen had 2.


Valencia vs Hart

Lady Vikings pull off an upset defeating Hart 4-2.

In the top of the 1st Tori Balta singled followed up by another single by Lauren Boser. Both runners were able to advance on a wild pitch. Megan Foglesong singled to right scoring both Balta and Boser. Caitlin Rooney singled to left, followed by a single to center by Amy Moore. Annie Dreher hit a deep flyout to left field allowing Foglesong to score. In the top of the 3rd, Rooney had a single to right field. Top of the 4th, Dreher singled to left. Bottom of 4th, after a single to center and a comebacker to Carly Mortensen with a throw to 2nd and the runner safe, the next batter had a sacrifice bunt allowing the Indians runners to advance to 2nd and 3rd. Mortensen struck out the next batter followed by a walk loading the bases. With two outs the batter hit a tough high chopper that looked like it would be impossible to get. Justine Sibthorp made a spectacular play to tag 3rd to end the inning and the threat by the Indians. Top of 5th, Lauren Boser singled to right. Bottom of the 5th,  the first batter was called out while hitting the ball out of the batters box. The next two outs were recorded by Boser who fielded two hard hit balls to get the batters out. Top of the 7th, Shannon Fitzgerald hit the only double of the game down the left field line. Balta advanced Fitzgerald to 3rd on a sacrifice bunt. Madison Shipman was intentionally walked. Bethany Kemp had a single between 2nd and 3rd to score Fitzgerald before Shipman was caught in a pickle and tagged out at 2nd. Going into the bottom of the 7th the score was 4-0 when the 1st batter was walked by Mortensen. The next batter was able to get on with an error, putting runners at 1st and 2nd. Kemp fielded the next out allowing runners to advance to 2nd and 3rd. The next batter flew out to to Foglesong allowing one run to score. A single to right allowed another run to score. The last out of the game was recorded by Shipman who made a great catch in foul ground territory along the lst base side. The Lady Vikings win a fantastic game. Mortensen was on the mound and recorded the win with 6 strikeouts in a very emotional game.


Valencia vs West Ranch

Lady Vikings hosted West Ranch.

Carly Mortensen tossed a no hitter with 9 strikeouts to lead the Vikings to a 3-0 win.

The top of the 1st inning was a little shaky when Mortensen was able to strikeout the 1st batter and walked the 2nd batter who went to 2nd on a delayed steal. The runner was able to advance to 3rd on an overthrow. The next 2 batters were hit by pitches on what coach Donna Lee thought were controversial calls. With the bases loaded the threat was ended by a strikeout by Mortensen and a groundout to Sibthorp. 2nd inning was led off by 2 strikeout followed by a walk and another strikeout to end the inning. Bottom of the 2nd, Rooney went to 1st when she was hit by the pitch. Amy Moore laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Rooney to 2nd. Bethany Kemp was also hit by a pitch, but the Vikings were unable to score. Top of 3rd, the Vikings were able to get the batters out 1,2,3 with a groundout to Lauren Boser, flyout to Megan Foglesong and a strikeout. 4th inning, once again West Ranch went 1,2,3 with a groundout to Mortensen and Kemp and a strikeout to end the inning. Bottom of 4th, Foglesong led off the inning with a walk and advanced to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Annie Dreher. Caitlin Rooney grounded out to 2nd advancing Foglesong to 3rd. Moore singled to left center scoring Foglesong. With Missy Fundora running for Moore, Kemp came up big with a triple scoring Fundora. Sibthorp walked and stole 2nd with an overthrow allowing Kemp to score and Sibthorp advancing to 3rd. In the 5th the only action that ensued was a walk by Foglesong. Top of 6th, Moore singled to left. 7th inning started off with a groundout to Kemp followed by a pop up to the infield that was dropped. The next batter walked followed by a pop up to Moore. With two outs in the inning Mortensen loaded the bases with a walk and got the last batter to flyout to Foglesong to end the threat and the game.


Valencia vs Golden Valley

The Lady Vikings took on Golden Valley at home.

Sarah Enriquez tossed a 2 hitter and had 6 strikeouts for the day and led the Vikings to a 7-1 win. In the top of the 1st Enriquez forced Golden Valley to get out 1,2,3. Bottom of

1st inning, Tori Balta led off the game with a walk and advanced to 2nd by a sacrifice bunt by Lauren Boser. Balta then advanced to 3rd on a ground out by Megan Foglesong. Annie Dreher walked. Caitlin Rooney doubled, bringing Balta home and sending Dreher to 3rd. 2nd inning Justine Sibthorp had a single to center and advanced to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Shannon Fitzgerald. Top opf the 3rd, Enriquez again got the batters to ground out and a strikeout to end the inning. Bottom of 3rd inning, Boser walked. Dreher tripled to the fence in center field scoring Boser. Rooney singled to center scoring Dreher. Bethany Kemp doubled to right field. Top of  4th, Golden Valley scored their only run of the game. Bottom of 4th, Balta doubled to center. Foglesong singled to center scoring Balta. Dreher singled to center advancing Foglesong to 2nd. Rooney doubled to right allowing Foglesong to score and advancing Dreher to 3rd. In the 5th Enriquez once again forced the batters out 1,2,3. Top of 6th, Enriquez forced the batters out with a strikeout followed by a flyout to Kemp and a ground out to Rooney. Bottom of the 6th, Boser tripled followed by a single by Foglesong, scoring Boser. Foglesong advancied to 2nd. Rooney singled to center scoring Foglesong. The 7th inning was ended by Enriquez who struck out the 1st batter followed by 2 groundouts.


Valencia vs Canyon

The Lady Vikings traveled across town to open their first league game against the Canyon Cowboys on 4/13/09.

Carly Mortensen posted the win in the circle with 10 strikeouts and 4 hits.

In the 2nd inning Caitlin Rooney singled to center and advanced to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Amy Moore. Bethany Kemp singled and advanced Rooney to 3rd. Top of the 3rd, Shannon Fitzgerald walked and moved to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Tori Balta. After Megan Foglesong was intentionally walked, Annie Dreher had something to say about that and singled to left, scoring Fitzgerald. Rooney had a hard hit single right at the pitcher and advanced Foglesong to 3rd and to home on a wild throw by the pitcher. In the bottom of the 4th, after being intentionally walked the previous two times, Canyons strongest hitter came to the plate. With Moore and Mortensen deciding to pitch to her, she hit a homerun to center field. That was followed by a very hard hit ball up center that Kemp dove for and threw the runner out at 1st. The next batter singled to right, followed by a bunt to Mortensen who threw to Lauren Boser for the out and Boser throwing to 2nd to get the lead runner for the 3rd out of the inning. Top of the 5th, Balta singled and went to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Boser. Top of 6th, Rooney singled to center. Moore singled to left. The Cowboys were able to score 1 more run to tie the game in the bottom of the 6th. Top of the 7th, Foglesong doubled to left center, but was unable to score. Extra innings!!!! Top of 8th, Rooney singled to right and advanced to 3rd on a bunt by Moore. Kemp was able to hit the ball deep into center field, which scored the go ahead run, Rooney. Missy Fundora came in as the designated hitter and was able to capitalize by having a double to left field. The Cowboys were unable to score in the bottom of the 8th.

Lady Vikings take their first win of the season, 3-2.


Valencia vs El Toro

Lady Vikings again go into extra innings and go on to win 1-0.

Top of the 1st Megan Foglesong singled to center. 2nd inning, Caitlin Rooney singled to right center followed by a sacrifice bunt by Annie Dreher. Amy Moore singled to left. Shannon Fitgerald drew a walk. The runners were left stranded. 3rd inning, Foglesong doubled to center. 4th inning, Moore singled to left center. 5th inning, Lauren Boser had a single to left. 6th inning, Dreher walked. Sara Solano came in to pinch run for Dreher.Moore laid down a sacrifice bunt advancing Solano to 2nd. With Madison Shipman at bat Solano was able to capitalize on a wild pitch and advance to 3rd.  7th inning, Fitzgerald singled and advanced to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Tori Balta. Boser grounded out advancing Fitzgerald to 3rd. Foglesong walked and followed up by stealing 2nd. Vikings were once again unable to capitalize. Bottom of 7th, First batter was able to hit a double with a bloop slap over 3rd, followed by a ground out to Rooney. The next runner was intentionally walked allowing runners at 1st and 2nd. Justine Sibthorp was able to handle a dribbler and running to 3rd to make the out. Last out of the inning was a pop up in foul territory to Rooney. Top of the 8th, with Bethany Kemp at 2nd, Rooney laid down a sacrifice bunt to allow Kemp to advance to 3rd. Dreher once again came through by hitting a single to right field, scoring Kemp, which proved to be the winning run. Sibthorp singled. Bottom of 8th, El Toro was shut down 1,2,3. Carly Mortensen posted a 2 hit shutout with 6 strikeouts.


Valencia vs Esperanza

For the last game of the tournament the Lady Vikings took on Esperanza on 4/11/09.

The game was led off by a blast with Tori Balta hitting a home run over the left field fence. Not to out done Lauren Boser added some damage by following up with a homerun of her own again over the left field fence. Megan Foglesong had a walk and was advanced to 3rd by a nice sacrifice bunt by Annie Dreher. Amy Moore doubled to center scoring Foglesong. With a grounder to Carly Mortensen, the throw was not in time to get the runner out at 1st. The next batter had a sacrifice bunt advancing the runner to 2nd. The runner attempted to steal 3rd, but Moore had other ideas and threw her out at 3rd. 2nd inning, Justine Sipthorp led off the inning with a single to right and advanced to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Shannon Fitzgerald. Bottom of the 2nd the inning was led off by a strikeout and followed up by a fantastic over the head catch by sipthorp. Third out was a ground out to Sipthorp as well. In the 3rd inning, Dreher singled. Bottom of 3rd, Esperanza was able to to score 1 run. 4th inning, Sipthorp hit a triple, but was not able to be brought home. Foglesong singled and stole 2nd. Dreher hit a hard shot right at the pitcher and was safe at 1st. In the bottom of the 5th with one runner on 1st the batter tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt, Boser decided to throw to 2nd instead and got the lead runner out. In the bottom of the 6th inning the Vikings had a little bit of a scare. With the first two batters hitting singles followed by a bunt single on an error, bases were loaded. Mortensen followed up with a strikeout for the first out of the inning. Moore knowing that bases were loaded, saw the runner at 2nd taking a very large lead, took the pitch and threw a bullet down to 2nd to get the base runner out. The last out of the inning was a groundout to Kemp who threw to 2nd. Top of 7th, Balta singled and went to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Boser. Foglesong drew a walk, but the runners were left stranded. Bottom of 7, the first batter drew a walk, followed by a hard shot going to center field, however Kemp made a diving save to prevent the runners from going any further than 1st and 2nd. Mortensen then struck out the next 3 batters. The game was won 3-1 with Mortensen having 7 strikeouts.


Valencia vs Vista Murrieta

Vikings had a rough go at it for their second game of the day.

Sarah Enriquez started on the mound. In the 1st inning Megan Foglesong singled to left. With the score 4-0, Nicole Miller came in relief for Enriquez in the 2nd inning. With 2 more runs scoring, Miller was able to end the inning with a strikeout followed by a fly ball to right field. Top of the 3rd, Allyson Peskay fielded a ground ball to 3rd throwing out the runner at 1st. Justine Sipthorp fielded a fly ball for the 2nd out. The 3rd out ended on a strikeout by Miller. Bottom of 3rd, Sipthorp singled to center. Tori Balta singled to right scoring Sipthorp. Top of 4th, after a few misques with fielding, Miller had a strikeout. The second out of the inning was a fly ball to center fielded by Jessica Smith. The last out of the inning was a fly ball to Elena Dickson. In the bottom of the 4th the only action was a walk drawn by Peskay. The Lady Vikings ended the game losing 13-1.


Valencia vs Rancho Bernardo

Lady Vikings love extra innings, so why not do it again against Rancho Bernardo. The Vikings took an early lead in the 1st inning. Tori Balta singled and advanced to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Lauren Boser. Megan Foglesong singled advancing Balta to 3rd. Caitlin Rooney came to the plate and hit a double to center scoring Balta and Foglesong. Amy Moore singled to right. 3rd inning, Boser walked. In the top of the 6th with the score still 2-0, Foglesong reached first when she was hit by a pitch. Annie Dreher had a sacrifice bunt allowing Foglesong to advance to 2nd. Rooney once again came up big by hitting a single to left scoring Foglesong. Sara Solano was put in to pinch run for Rooney but was unable to advance or score. In the bottom of the 6th Rancho Bernardo was able to score 3 runs, tying the game. In the top of the 7th, Bethany Kemp singled to center, but was called out at 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Shannon Fitzgerald. So extra innings here we go! 8th inning with Balta on 2nd, Boser sacrificed bunt advancing Balta to 3rd. Foglesong singled to score Balta. Dreher singled to left advancing Foglesong to 2nd. Amy Moore doubled to right center scoring Foglesong. With the bottom of the 8th coming up and the Vikings winning 5-3, Mortensen got the first batter to hit a ground ball to her. Seeing the runner at 2nd with a big lead, Carly Mortensen ran toward her and caught her in a pickle. She was ultimately tagged out by Moore for the first out of the inning. One more run was allowed to score for Rancho Bernardo. The game was ended with the Vikings winning 5-4. Mortensen was the winning pitcher allowing 6 hits and 3 strikeouts.
