Valencia vs El Modena

Sarah Enriquez on the mound recorded a 5-1 win with 10 strikeouts.

In the first inning, Megan Foglesong walked with Lauren Boser laying down a bunt to advance Foglesong to 2nd and Boser safe at 1st. Both runners were able to advance on a wild pitch to Madison Shipman. Shipman singled and with Foglesong scoring. With runners at 1st and 3rd, Shipman stole 2nd. Bethany Kemp singled but Boser was tagged out at the plate, while Shipman advanced to 3rd. Caitlin Rooney singled to left scoring Shipman. With Annie Dreher up to bat, bases became loaded when she was hit by a pitch. Vikings were left stranded on the bases. In the 4th inning Justine Sibthorp singled to center. 5th inning, Boser doubled to left. Pinch runner Elena Dickson was able to steal 3rd. Shipman singled to left, scoring Dickson. Jessica Smith singled to right field. In the top of the 6th inning with a runner on 3rd, Shannon Fitzgerald made a fantastic diving catch in left field to prevent the runner at 3rd from scoring to end the inning. Bottom of the 6th inning, with two out Foglesong singled and then stole 2nd. Boser doubled to left scoring Foglesong. Shipman singled to center scoring Boser. Lindsay Clark had a walk. 7th inning, With runners at 2nd and 3rd, El Modena was able to score just one run enabling the Lady Vikings to come away with a 5-1 victory.


Valencia vs Pacifica

Lady Vikings faced Pacifica High School and came away with another close 2-1 win.

With Carly Mortensen on the mound to start the game, the 1st inning was a little rocky. With bases loaded, Bethany Kemp was able to get a ground ball and throw home for the first out. A fly ball that was caught in right field was enough for Pacifica to be able to have the runner tag up and score. Thanks to some great defense by Amy Moore the 3rd out came when the runner was trying to steal 2nd, but Moore thought otherwise and made a great throw for the 3rd out. Bottom of 1st, Megan Foglesong’s bat remained alive for this game when she had a double to start the inning. Lauren Boser had a sacrifice bunt to advance Foglesong to 3rd. Madison Shipman singled to center scoring Foglesong. Kemp had a walk. Top of 2nd, Pacifica went down 1,2,3. Shipman drew a walk in the 3rd. 4th inning, Caitlin Rooney had a single. In the top of the 5th with a runner at 1st, Sarah Enriquez was brought in. No runs scored in the 5th. Bottom of 5th, Annie Dreher had a single. Moore had a sacrifice bunt advancing Dreher to 2nd. Lauren Boser had a drive into center for a single advancing Dreher to 3rd. Shipman was intentionally walked to load the bases. Vikings were unable to score. Top of 6th inning, Pacifica was unable to score. Bottom of 6h, Rooney singled to left, followed by a steal at 2nd. Fitzgerald walked. Tori Balta then hit a hard shot to left center field which scored Rooney and proved to be the winning run.

Valencia vs El Toro

Lady Vikings faced El Toro for a disheartening loss 3-2.

Due to some outstanding pitching by Sarah Enriquez and great defense by the Vikings, this was a close game. In the top of the 1st inning, Megan Foglesong had a single to center field followed by a sacrifice bunt by Lauren Boser advancing Foglesong to 2nd. Foglesong then stole 3rd base. Bethany Kemp then walked. Caitlin Rooney came up with a single to center field scoring Foglesong. Bottom of the 1st, Enriquez and company were able to keep El Toro scoreless.  In the top of the 2nd, Shannon Fitzgerald singled. Madison Shipman drew a walk and Foglesong singled to load the bases. The Lady Vikings were unable to score. Bottom of the 2nd, El Toro remained scoreless. 3rd inning, Kemp singled, Rooney had a sacrifice bunt, but was safe on an overthrow by El Toro advancing Kemp to 3rd. Bottom of the 3rd, El Toro remained scoreless due to the efforts of Enriquez, Boser, and Rooney. In the top of the 4th, Foglesong hit a homerun over the center field fence. Bottom of the 4th, Enriquez dropped the batters 1,2,3 with three strikeouts. In the bottom of the 5th, El Toro was able to score twice to tie the game. Top of 6th, with runners on 1st and 2nd, Enriquez was able to get the next batter on a ground out to Rooney. With runners now at 2nd and 3rd, Rooney had a pop up for the second out. Coach Donna Lee had the next batter intentionally walked due to her hot bat. Enriquez was able to get the next batter to ground out to end the inning and the threat. Bottom of the 7th, El Toro was able to capitalize and get the win on a homerun. Enriquez had 7 strikeouts on the game.


Valencia vs Sunrise Mountain

Lady Vikings win 4-1

In the top of the 1st and 2nd innings, Sarah Enriquez on the mound was able to keep Sunrise Mountain scoreless along with great Viking defense. In the top of the 3rd Enriquez struck out the first batter of the inning followed by a homerun. Enriquez only allowed 1 run for Sunrise Mountain. In the middle of the inning, Carly Mortensen came in on relief for Enriquez and followed up with 2 strikeouts to end the inning and the threat by Sunrise Mountain. In the bottom of the 3rd, Lindsay Clark hit a one hop bouncer to the center field fence for a double. Madison Shipman had a hard hit ground rule double into left field scoring Clark. Amy Moore came to the plate and hit a shot into left for a double scoring Shipman. Both Lauren Boser and Bethany Kemp hit for singles when Caitlin Rooney came to the plate, hitting a double, scoring Boser and advancing Kemp to 3rd base. Tori Balta had a single to score Kemp and advance Rooney to 3rd. 4th inning, Shannon Fitzgerald had a walk. Shipman had a single to advance Fitzgerald to 3rd. Shipman then stole 2nd, but the runners were left stranded. 5th inning, Kemp had a single to center. Fitzgerald got out on a hard shot to 3rd, but advanced Kemp to 2nd. In the top of the 7th, Sunrise Mountain had a ground rule double, followed by a walk, deep fly out to Clark, followed by the next to outs being handled by Rooney. Enriquez had 1 strikeout, Mortensen had 8.

Vikings vs Pleasant Grove

March 26, Lady Vikings vs. Pleasant Grove.

Sarah Enriquez was on the mound for the Lady Vikings having 5 strikeouts. In the bottom of the 1st inning with two runners on and a pickle ensuing between 1st and 2nd Pleasant Grove was able to score one run. In the top of the 2nd the Lady Vikings were able to answer back with a single by Bethany Kemp, sacrifice bunt by Caitlin Rooney which advanced Kemp to 2nd. Amy Moore had a bunt single advancing Kemp to 3rd. Annie Dreher was able to ground out which allowed Kemp to score. In the top of the 3rd inning Shannon Fitzgerald singled and advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch to Madison Shipman. Shipman then doubled to center and advanced Shannon to 3rd. With Lauren Boser at the plate, the catcher made a wild throw to 3rd to try and get Fitzgerald out. Fitzgerald capitalized and ran home. In the top of the 4th, Rooney singled, pinch runner Missy Fundora was put in to run and advanced to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Moore. Bottom of the 4th, with the score at 2-1, Pleasant Grove was able to get a homerun to tie the game. With runners at 1st and 3rd, Carly Mortensen was brought in and was able to get out of the inning. Top of the 5th inning Shipman had a hard single down the third base line and then stole 2nd. Megan Foglesong grounded out advancing Shipman to 3rd. With the next two innings remaing scoreless, the Lady Vikings went into an international tie breaker. With Fitzgerald starting on 2nd base, Foglesong came up big with a double up center, scoring Fitzgerald. Lauren Boser who has hit well all evening came to the plate and hit yet another double into left field advancing Foglesong to 3rd. Kemp hit an infield single to load the bases. Rooney came up big with a hard single scoring Foglesong and Boser. With the Lady Vikings up 5-2 they headed into the bottom of the 8th.With the inning led off by a strikeout, the next two batters followed with singles, scoring the international tie break runner from 2nd. With the score now 5-3, Mortensen struck out the next batter and was one out away from putting the game away. Unfortunately, that was not to be. With the batter having two strikes on her, Mortensen who had struck her out the previous two times on curve balls, threw another and the batter was able to get a hold of it for a 3 run homerun to end the game with Pleasant Grove winning in extra innings by the score of 6-5. Mortensen was able to strikeout  8. Nonetheless, we are very proud of you ladies.


Vikings vs Vista Murrieta

March 26, Lady Vikings traveled to Huntington Beach for the Nike Faster to First Tournament. First up, Vikings vs. Vista Murrieta.

Carly Mortensen who was on the mound for the Lady Vikings posted a 2-1 win with 7 strikeouts. In the 1st inning, Murieta was unable to capitalize on anything thanks to what seemed to be an almost impossible on the move catch by Tori Balta in right field. In the top of the 3rd inning, Vikings came alive with a single by Annie Dreher. With pinch runner Missy Fundora running for Dreher, Balta singled to advance Fundora to 2nd. Shannon Fitzgerald had a sacrifice bunt which advanced Fundora to 3rd and Balta to 2nd. Up comes Lauren Boser with a fantastic hit down the right field line for a ground rule double scoring Fundora and Balta. In the bottom of the 3rd, Vista Murietta was able to muster up their only run of the game. In the top of the 4th inning, Amy Moore had a single, with pinch runner Lindsay Clark on the bases, an interference was called to end the inning. Top of the 6th inning, Boser again hit a ground rule double in what seemed to be a mirror image of her first hit. Caitlin Rooney followed, and was hit by a pitch. Bottom of the 6th, Vista Murieta seemed as though they would come back, however the Vikings were thinking differently. The first batter had a double to center, followed up by a walk. Next was a bunt to Mortensen who threw the runner out at 1st. With 1 out the next batter hit the ball to Mortensen who threw to Moore at home for the put out. The inning was ended with a strikeout. In the bottom of the 7th, Vista Murrieta threatened again. Led off by a single followed by a pop up to Bethany Kemp. Vista Murrieta was able to get another single which put runners at 1st and 2nd. With the two best hitters coming up, Coach Donna Lee made a decision to intentionally walk the next batter, leaving the bases loaded. Mortensen was able to strike out the next batter, followed by a ground out to Mortensen to end the game. This was a nail biter of a game, but the Lady Vikings came away with the win.


Valencia vs El Dorado

On Thursday March 19 the Lady Vikings traveled to El Dorado High School in Placentia, coming away with a 3-1 win.

In the 1st inning Madison Shipman had a two out single followed by a steal at 2nd. Bethany Kemp walked when Caitlin Rooney came to the plate and took a single to left, scoring Shipman. 3rd Inning, Madison Shipman belted the ball over the portable fence, but it was taken away by the center fielder who was able to bend the fence over to catch it. 5th inning, Tori Balta singled to left field and advanced to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Shannon Fitzgerald. Foglesong singled advancing Balta to 3rd. Foglesong stole 2nd while Lauren Boser was up to bat and was able to go to 1st by a catcher’s interference. Shipman came up and singled, scoring Foglesong and Balta. Bottom of the 5th El Dorado was able to score one run. 6th inning, Rooney singled when Justine Sibthorp was brought in to run for her. Unfortunately, a double play followed. 7th inning, Shannon Fitzgerald singled, but was unable to score. On the mound for the Vikings, Carly Mortensen who had 10 strikeouts for the day. Fantastic job ladies!

Valencia vs Oxnard

On Tuesday March 17, 2009 the Lady Vikings came away with a 2-0 win against Oxnard High School. In the first inning, Lauren Boser walked. 2nd inning Amy Moore singled to center. 3rd inning, Megan Foglesong singled followed by a stolen base. Boser hit to left for a double, scoring Foglesong. 4th inning, Tori Balta had a single to center field. 5th inning, Foglesong had a hard grounder to left for a single and stole 2nd base. Madison Shipman came to the plate and hit a hard shot down the right side that ended out of play and was ruled a ground rule double, scoring Foglesong. 6th inning was led off with a walk by Jessica Smith and followed up with stealing 2nd. Lindsay Clark came to the plate and hit a hard shot to 2nd and just missed being safe. 6th inning, Foglesong led off with a walk. Shipman singled to short advancing Foglesong to 2nd.
Sara Enriquez had 7 strikeouts on the day. Great job ladies!!!

and walked away with a back to back Championship win. Congrats to the
girls for a great weekend and what is hoped to be the beginning of a

The Lady Vikings took to the road on Wednesday March 11, 2009 traveling to Bullhead City, Arizona for the Tournament of Champions where they would try to defend their 2 year run as champions. With 40 teams entered into the tournament it would not be a small task.

San Juan Hills 10-0

On Thursday March 12, the Lady Vikings played San Juan Hills of San Juan Capistrano, California and came out strong with a10-0 win. With Sara Enriquez on the mound throwing a dandy of a game with a 1 hitter and 11 strikeouts. Megan Foglesong started the game with a single advancing to second on a wild throw. Madison Shipman came to the plate hitting a hard shot to advance Foglesong to 3rd. Bethany Kemp had a hard hit ball to center field scoring Foglesong, followed by a Caitlin Rooney single. In the 2nd inning Annie Dreher singled advancing to 2nd on a wild throw. Tori Balta coming to the plate had a nice single allowing Dreher to advance to 3rd. Shannon Fitzgerald hit a hard grounder that scored Dreher. Foglesong came to the plate hitting a shot to center field for another single and advancing Fitzgerald to 2nd. A wild pitch to Lauren Boser, put both runners in scoring position. Boser than singled to score Fitzgerald. Up to the plate came Madison Shipman, hitting a single to score Foglesong followed by a wild pitch that Boser took advantage of sliding into home. 3rd inning, Rooney had a single to left field and advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch and to 3rd on a throwing error by the catcher. Amy Moore came to the plate to hit a hard shot to right field scoring Rooney. Balta followed up with a single to center. 4th inning, again, Foglesong came to the plate and singled followed by stealing 2nd and 3rd. Shipman again singled scoring Foglesong while Shipman ran to 2nd. Kemp had a hard hit ball to center scoring Shipman from 2nd. Rooney followed up with a single to center while Kemp advanced to 2nd. Moore up to the plate watched a ball go by as Kemp and Rooney both advanced. Moore than hit a nice shot to center field scoring Kemp and advancing Rooney to 3rd. Jessica Smith hit a hard sacrifice fly allowing Rooney to score. Ally Peskay was at the plate with a 2-0 count when our runner was caught stealing.

Ironwood High School 5-0

On Friday March 13, the Lady Vikings played Ironwood High School from Glendale, Arizona and came away with a 5-0 win.
Carly Mortensen took to the mound throwing a perfect game posting 13 strikeouts with the help of her catcher Amy Moore’s pitch selection and her teammates great fielding. In the 2nd inning Bethany Kemp had a nice double to center followed by a double by Moore scoring Kemp. Tori Balta had a single advancing pinch runner Elena Dickson. 3rd inning, Megan Foglesong hit a double and advanced to 3rd with a nice sacrifice bunt by Lauren Boser. Foglesong then scored with an overthrow. 4th inning, Caitlin Rooney led the inning off with a walk and Justine Sibthorp was put in to pinch run followed by singles from Moore and Annie Dreher. With an overthrow, pinch runner Dickson advanced to 3rd. Shannon Fitzgerald had a single to right field scoring Dickson and advancing Dreher to 3rd. 4th inning, Boser led the inning with a hard shot double to left field that hit the fence just missing a homerun. Madison Shipman than hit a bullet over the fence for a 2 run homerun. Caitlin Rooney followed with a double to right field. 6th inning Lindsay Clark hit a hard shot down the 1st base line that looked as if it would go through but the first baseman made a great snag. Jessica Smith came to the plate with a single down the first base side.

Chino Hills High School 5-3

On Friday March 13, the Vikings playing their second game of the day, taking on Chino High School, coming away with a 5-3 win. What a game it was! Sara Enriquez took to the mound in the 1st inning and shut them down. In the bottom of the 1st Megan Foglesong had a hard hit single down the the left side of the field followed by another hard hit single by Lauren Boser advancing Foglesong 3rd and onto home to score. Madison Shipman Singled to right center field then stole 2nd and onto 3rd with a wild pitch. Top of the 2nd inning Chino was only able to muster up one single which produced nothing. Bottom of the 2nd, Amy Moore led off the inning with a double to left field followed by yet another double to left field by Jessica Smith scoring pinch runner Lindsay Clark. Top of 3rd, again Enriquez held Chino to a scoreless inning. Bottom of the 3rd, both Shipman and Caitlin Rooney singled but were unable to capitalize. Top of 4th, Enriquez was able to hold Chino to a scoreless inning with an excellent defense behind her. Top of 5th, Enriquez and her teammates were able to hold the opponents to a scoreless inning. Bottom of the 5th, Shipman hit another rope to left field going on to steal 2nd. Top of 6th, only 1 run was scored by Chino. Top of 7th, Chino was able to score 1 more run tying the game 2-2. Bottom of 7th, Tori Balta hit a single to right field followed by Lauren Boser getting beaned in the head by the pitcher advancing her to 1st. With runners on 1st and 2nd, Chino took no chances and intentionally walked the feared hitting of Shipman, loading the bases. Unfortunately, the Vikings were not able to score sending them into an extra inning, international tie breaker situation. With Enriquez still pitching strong in the top of the 8th inning, 1 run was able to score. Bottom of the 8th, With Bethany Kemp starting out on 2nd base, Caitlin Rooney had a hard hit single down the 3rd base side allowing Kemp to score from 2nd. Amy Moore than laid down a sacrifice bunt. Vikings left the inning with the score tied 3-3. Top of 9th inning, Coach Donna Lee decided to mix it up a little by bringing in Carly Mortensen into pitch. Chino was shut down. In the bottom of the 9th, Balta was placed on 2nd with Annie Dreher laying down a sacrifice bunt advancing Balta to 3rd. Vikings came away empty handed. Onto the top of the 10th inning, Mortensen pitching with the runner starting at 2nd a sacrifice bunt was placed down advancing the runner to 3rd. Next batter came to the plate hitting a ball to Shipman who threw the ball to Boser to get the out as the runner from 3rd was running home, Boser made a hard throw to Moore who made a fantastic play at the plate to tag the runner out. Bottom of the 10th inning, Clark would start off the inning on 2nd base. Bethany Kemp came to the plate with one out and hit a towering shot over the left field fence for a game winning 2 run homerun.

Santa Monica High School 5-3

On Saturday March 14, the Vikings played Santa Monica High School. Carly Mortensen took to the mound for the Vikings. In the top of the 3rd, Annie Dreher had a single to center field followed by a sacrifice bunt by Tori Balta. The first three innings for both teams remained scoreless. In the top of the 4th Bethany Kemp walked and stole 2nd. Bottom of the 4th, with a runner on 1st attempting to steal 2nd, Amy Moore threw a bullet down to 2nd for an out. With a single and a walk, the next batter hit a double which scored 2 runs. In the top of the 5th Dreher singled to center, followed by a double to center by Balta. With Dreher on 3rd, Shannon Fitzgerald came up to bat hitting a single scoring Dreher. Up next Megan Foglesong grounded out to 2nd scoring Balta. Sara Enriquez was brought to the mound. With the score tied at 2-2. The 6th and 7th innings remained scoreless. Once again the Vikings were going into an extra inning game. Top of the 8th inning Balta was the runner on 2nd and advanced to 3rd on a bunt by Shannon Fitzgerald. Foglesong came up to the plate and hit a triple scoring 2 runs. Lauren Boser followed up with a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Foglesong. Bottom of the 8th inning, with a single to center by Santa Monica, runners were now at 1st and 3rd. Enriquez followed that with a strike out. There was another single to center which scored 1 run. With the score now 5-3, Enriquez threw a great pitch forcing the batter to fly out to Foglesong ending the game with a win for the Vikings and advancing them to the championship game.

Norco High School 2-4

On Saturday March 14, Championship game Lady Vikings take on Norco High School. Sara Enriquez starting on the mound for the Vikings started the game with 2 strikeouts followed by a walk that did not amount to anything thanks to Amy Moore’s put out at 2nd base. In the bottom of the 3rd inning Norco was able to get a hold of one for a homerun followed by a put out by Madison Shipman and a bunt out. After a single to left field Carly Mortensen took to the mound with a strikeout. In the top of the 4th inning Shipman singled to right field followed by a stolen base. In the bottom of the 4th, Vikings were able to hold them with three straight outs. Top of the 5th, Moore hit a single to deep right center after battling off many pitches. Tori Balta singled to right center field advancing pinch runner Lindsay Clark to 3rd. Shannon Fitzgerald walked loading the bases. Megan Foglesong hit a shot into center field scoring Clark and with Balta running home, slid into home plate and seemed to be under the tag, but was called out. Bottom of the 5th, with a walk, Caitlin Rooney made a difficult throw to 1st to get the runner out. With a little mishap in the field the runner scored. Top of 6th, Bethany Kemp led off the inning with a 200 ft. shot over the left field fence, tying the game at 2-2. Bottom of the 6th, the inning started with a walk, followed by a bunt to Mortensen who threw the runner out at 1st and advancing the lead runner to 2nd. With the next batter walked Sara Enriquez was brought in. Enriquez struck out the first batter. A hit to left field scored two runs, followed by a fly out for the third out. Top of 7th, Moore started off the inning with a single to the right side. Pinch runner Clark stole 2nd. Balta hit a fielder’s choice to right field advancing Clark to 3rd. Unfortunately, the Vikings were not able to come up with a run and came up short. The score was 2-4 Norco. Lady Vikings played a fantastic tournament and came away with the runners up trophy.

After a hard fought battle over three extremely competitive days in Bullhead City trying to defend our two time title, the Lady Vikings came up short in the Championship game losing 4-2 to Norco. Regardless of the final result, we still feel very proud of the way we played and will be back next year to make a run at regaining our title.
