Vikings Beat Canyon
The Vikings beat Canyon today in the league opener at Vallhala Field 9-0.
Megan Fogelsong went 3 for 4 today for the Lady Vikings.
Valencia Bats Shut Out Canyon 9-0
In the league opener, Valencia’s bats came alive with 14 hits. Offensively, the team was led by Lauren Boser who had 3 RBIs on a 1 for 3 hit day, to include a sacrifice fly. Megan Foglesong was 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and Jessica Spigner went 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Annie Dreher continued her hot hitting by going 2 for 2, including a double and 1 RBI.
The Vikings got on the board in the 3rd after Foglesong led off and stole second. Spigner ripped a shot to left center for the first RBI of the contest and then Lauren Boser came up with a big 2 RBI single with a shot of her own to left center. Dreher then hit a hard bouncer to left field to knock in an RBI and then another run scored when the left fielder misplayed the ball. 5 runs scored on 6 hits in the 3rd.
In the bottom of the 4th, Lani Bernardino got things started with a perfectly placed slap bunt in front of the plate and Foglesong followed up with her 2nd hit of the day. Spigner then drove the ball to deep center and the ball hit the top lip of the fence, only to bounce back in the field of play, to capture her 2nd RBI and hit of the day, scoring Bernardino. Boser followed suit again with her 3rd RBI of the day off a deeply hit ball to centerfield. To keep things going in the 5th, Dreher led off the inning with a deep hit to center that sailed over the centerfielder’s head. Lindsey Clark then batted and reached base on a fielder’s choice, stole 2nd, and then advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch. Bernardino slapped the ball to 3rd and after she was thrown out at 1st , the 1st baseman quickly threw home to nail Clark at the plate, but in the hard slide home the catcher dropped the ball.
Valencia concluded their offense with 9 runs off 14 hits. Madison Shipman was 2 for 3 on the day and Amy Moore was 2 for 4, each scoring a run. Defensively, Moore beautifully picked off the Canyon runner threatening to score from 3rd. Spigner had 12 strike outs, including striking out the side in the 2nd and 3rd innings, and carried a NO-NO into the 7th inning, but gave up 1 hit on the day to the very talented Nicole Johnson.
Valencia next travels to Golden Valley on Tuesday, 4/1 for their second league game.

Vikings Defeat Chaminade
Valencia invokes mercy rule against Chaminade, defeating them 10-0.
Lani Bernardino led off the game with a single and was sacrificed to 2nd by Megan Foglesong. Jessica Spigner then singled to right field to plate Bernardino. Madison Shipman followed with a single of her own to right center and then Amy Moore hit a 2-out basehit to right center to drive in 2 more. Bethany Kemp then walked and the sophomore Annie Dreher hit her 2nd double of the season to knock in another 2 runs, bringing the final tally to 5.
In the 2nd inning, Bernardino led off with a single, followed in order with 5 more singles by Foglesong, Spigner, Shipman (2 RBI), Boser (RBI), and Moore (RBI). For the 3rd straight inning, Bernardino led off, but this time with a triple. She was knocked in by Foglesong to end the scoring in the 3rd at 10. The bats quieted down a bit in the 4th and 5th innings, but Boser and Dreher each had another single and Spigner drove a double deep to right center.
On the day, Bernardino was 3/3 with 3 runs scored; Spigner was 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI; Shipman was 2/3 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs, Moore was 2/3 with 3 RBIs and a run scored; Dreher was 2/3 with 2 RBIs, Boser was 2/3 with 1 RBI; Foglesong was 1 for 2 with an RBI and run scored. Kemp also drew 2 base on balls and scored once.
Defensively, the team was led by Spigner on the mound, who pitched her first perfect game, striking out 6 in five innings of work. In the 5th, Randall Moreland preserved the perfection by throwing the girl out from right field to Boser at 1st base. Next up for the Vikings is Canyon Country, the first league opponent on Thursday, 3/27 at home.

TOC Championship vs Riverside Poly
Valencia defeated Riverside Poly: score 11-3
In the championship game, Spigner gave up a homerun in the 2nd inning to Riverside Poly pitcher Kendall Gorham. Poly scored again in the top of the 3rd off a single from Karli Sandoval. Down 2-0 in the bottom of the 3rd, Valencia loaded the bases, sparked by a walk from Garza and back to back singles from Foglesong and Bernardino. Spigner dramatically belted a line drive off the upper right field fence, knocking in 2 to tie the game at 2 a-piece. Shipman followed with an RBI single to left center to give Valencia the lead. In the bottom of the 4th, with one out, Valencia had 3 back to back singles by Garza, Foglesong, and Bernardino, and RBIs coming from Bernardino and Moore. With the bases empty and the score 6-3, Poly proceeded to (mistakenly) intentionally walk Spigner, and Shipman answered that challenge with a 2-run homer, giving Valencia a comfortable 8-2 lead. Valencia further continued to rally with 2 outs and 3 more singles, including RBIs from Garza and Kemp, a single from Rooney, and a wild pitch that scored Boser to bring the score to 11-2. During the top of the 5th, Cori Reinhardt led off with a single and scored off a second single from Sandoval, who finished the contest 2/3 with 2 RBIs. Due to a tournament mercy rule, Valencia did not bat in the bottom of the 5th. Final score: 11-3.
Lani Bernardino: 2/3, 1 RBI, 2 runs scored
Jessica Spigner: 1/2, 2 RBI, intentional BB
Madison Shipman: 2/3, 3 RBIs, 2 run HR
Megan Foglesong: 2/3, 2 runs scored
Alyssa Garza: 2/2, 1 RBI, 1 run scored
Bethany Kemp: 1/3, 1 RBI
Winning Pitcher: Jessica Spigner / 6 Ks, 6 hits, 2 earned runs, 0 walks
Note: Spigner pitched every pitch for the Vikings, striking out 30 in 5 games, giving up 3 earned runs. Moore called each game as her battery behind the plate. She also caught 3 girls stealing.
Jessica Spigner was named Tournament MVP after pitching all 5 games and leading her team to V-I-C-T-O-R-Y!

TOC Game 4 vs Pacifica
Valencia defeated Pacifica of Garden Grove (Currently ranked 28th on Preseason Fab 50): score 4-1
In the 3rd inning, Pacifica reached base off an infield error and later scored off a 2 out single. Valencia answered the call with 2 of their own in the bottom of the 3rd. Foglesong sparked the offense with a lead-off triple to the right field fence. Bernardino heroically dropped an RBI squeeze bunt to score Foglesong and tie the game. Then with 2 outs, Shipman drilled a single to score Bernardino, tallying the frame at 2-1. In the bottom of the 5th, Bernardino hit a 1-out single and was advanced to 3rd from a sac off the bat of Moore. The throw to 3rd was wild and Bernardino ran home, scoring her 2nd run of the contest. To start the 6th inning, Shipman led off with her 3rd consecutive single and advanced to 2nd off a single to left field from Caitlin Rooney. “Ship” was moved over to 3rd by Boser and then scored on a ground ball off the bat of Kemp. Spigner faced a very strong Pacifica team, but kept them off balance for each of the 7 frames. She only gave up 3 hits and 1 walk, and struck out 4. Shipman sealed the victory with a double play by stepping on 2nd and throwing to Boser at 1st for the final out.
Megan Foglesong: Triple, 1 run scored
Madison Shipman: 3/3, 1 RBI
Lani Bernardino: 2/3, 1 RBI
Bethany Kemp: 1 RBI
Winning Pitcher: Jessica Spigner / 4 Ks / 3 hitter / 0 earned runs
